Makkah Ziyarat Guide: Holy Sites & How to Get There
Visiting Makkah for Umrah or Hajj is a deeply spiritual experience. But beyond the Tawaf and Sa'i at Masjid al-Haram, Makkah is surrounded by sacred historical sites that carry enormous significance in Islamic history. These places are collectively known as Ziyarat, meaning visits to holy sites.
Getting to these sites independently can be challenging, especially for first-time pilgrims unfamiliar with Makkah's roads. This guide covers the most important Ziyarat sites in Makkah and the easiest way to visit them.
Most Important Ziyarat Sites in Makkah
Masjid al-Haram
The Grand Mosque is the heart of Makkah and the primary destination for every pilgrim. It houses the Kaaba, the Zamzam Well, Safa and Marwa, and Maqam Ibrahim. Most pilgrims stay within walking distance but for those staying further away, a taxi is the most practical option, especially after Fajr and Isha prayers when roads around the mosque are extremely busy.
Jabal al-Nour
This is the mountain where the Cave of Hira is located, the place where the first revelation of the Quran was received by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It is approximately 4 kilometers from Masjid al-Haram. The climb involves around 1,200 steps and takes 30 to 45 minutes. Most pilgrims take a taxi to the base of the mountain and climb from there.
Jabal Thawr
Jabal Thawr is the mountain containing the cave where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Abu Bakr took refuge during the migration to Madina. It sits approximately 4 kilometers south of Masjid al-Haram and is a significant historical site. A taxi is the most convenient way to reach the base.
Mina
Mina is the tent city located approximately 8 kilometers from Masjid al-Haram. It is a central site during Hajj where pilgrims perform the symbolic stoning of the devil at Jamarat Bridge. Outside of Hajj season, pilgrims visit Mina as part of their Ziyarat to understand its historical significance.
Arafat and Jabal al-Rahmah
The plains of Arafat, located around 20 kilometers from Makkah, are where the most important ritual of Hajj takes place on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah. Many pilgrims visit this site outside of Hajj season as part of their Umrah Ziyarat tour.
Masjid al-Jinn and Masjid al-Rayah
These two smaller mosques hold significant historical value. Masjid al-Jinn marks the spot where a group of Jinn embraced Islam after hearing the Quran recited. Masjid al-Rayah was built at the location where the Prophet (PBUH) planted his flag during the conquest of Makkah. Both are frequently included in full-day Ziyarat tours.
Jannat al-Mualla Cemetery
This historic cemetery is the resting place of several family members of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) including Sayyida Khadijah (RA). It holds deep emotional and spiritual significance and is one of the most visited Ziyarat sites in Makkah.
How to Visit Makkah Ziyarat Sites by Taxi
Visiting multiple Ziyarat sites in one day requires a planned route and a driver who knows the city well. Trying to use ride-hailing apps or street taxis for Ziyarat is inefficient as these drivers are not always familiar with the specific sites or the best routes between them.
The most practical option is booking a dedicated Makkah Ziyarat taxi that covers all your chosen sites in a single trip.
At Saudia Taxi Service, our drivers are experienced with Makkah Ziyarat routes. We offer half-day and full-day tours that take you to the most significant sites without the stress of navigating Makkah's busy roads yourself.
Half-Day vs Full-Day Ziyarat Tour
Half-day tour covers the closer sites such as Jabal al-Nour, Jabal Thawr, Jannat al-Mualla, and the smaller mosques. It typically takes 3 to 4 hours and is ideal for pilgrims with limited time.
Full-day tour covers all major sites including Mina, Arafat, and Jabal al-Rahmah in addition to the closer sites. It takes 6 to 8 hours and gives you a complete experience of Makkah's sacred geography.
Both options are available for the 4-seater sedan or 7-seater Staria van depending on your group size. Visit our Makkah Taxi Service page for more details on vehicles and availability.
